Foaling
History
Cindy was born here, a result of our breeding program. She had one prior foal (filly), in 2006. As a maiden mare, Cindy foaled about 4 days past her due date, at 3AM. She was bagged, with no wax. Normally a fairly quiet mare in the stall, defining a 4 hour foaling window was
a challenge. Even when she was in stage 1 labor she was quietly restless, not obvious.
Jan 28
6AM - Cindy is bagged and waxed both sides with a tiny drip! She has had 1 rather active period 8-9 (PST) and the rest of her mild activity has been 12-4. She was restless all
night. Continued to be restless all day, increasing into the evening, graduating to include some pawing, etc. She finally lay down and her water broke about 8:52. Buckskin overo filly was out at 9pm, 2 days early.

Jan 25
Cindy looks like she'll hold on for a while longer. 3/4 bagged. Foaling window still looks like @ 12-4 PST. Behavior change - Cindy still taking multiple naps each night, but the naps are more
like 30 minutes instead of an hour. More restless between naps, sometimes wandering the stall instead of standing quietly.
Jan 23
Cindy has a hint of white (indicating colostrum) wax on 1 nipple - her off side - so it appears her milk is in transition! Completing the transition may take hours, or many days. She is over 2/3 bagged. Cindy is still carrying her
foal fairly high, but it appears to be dropping.
Jan 21
About 2/3 bagged. Cindy appears to be subtly active in the 12+ time frame (PST), but has also been active between 9 and 10. If I had to choose, at this point I'd guess 12-4 as most likely for a foaling window. Subject
to change as she gets closer. :-) Cindy tends to lie down to rest several times a night, often for as long as an hour.
Two prior foals, both with us. As a maiden mare in 2005, Dirty foaled at noon, 2 1/2 weeks early. She was half bagged, with no milk or wax. In 2007 she foaled at 355 days, bagged and blatantly waxed, at 1:50 AM. This mare
tends to have an active tail in the week or so prior to foaling, so may need to watch for other activity to indicate a foaling window or labor.
Jan 26
7AM Dirty is now fully bagged, softening under the tail, and this morning had a hint of clear wax, so her milk is in transition!
Looking more uncomfortable. By noon, Dirty transitioned to dripping milk and had her foal (attended) in turnout. Sorrel overo filly! 6 days early.
Jan 25
About 3/4 bagged. Looking more uncomfortable. Her tail isn't flying frequently like last time, so it is a better indicator for discomfort. Also a bit of pawing, an occasional belly kick. She looks reluctant to lie down
sometimes, and her naps are shorter. Foaling window still not confirmed. Activity 6-10 and also 12-4 PST.
Jan 21
About 2/3 bagged. So far it looks like Dirty's foaling window will fall into the 11-4 (PST) category. Closer monitoring as she approaches actually producing that foal will hopefully refine that time frame prediction.
And subject to change as she gets closer. :-)

Foaling
History
Unknown number of prior foals. Two foals with us. Luvy
foaled in 2006 at 371 days, fully bagged, with no wax and little notice.
In 2007 at 353 days, 2/3 bagged and no wax, Luvy walked away from dinner, foaled, and returned to dinner. Prior activity was a periodically active tail, making it
difficult to predict a foaling window.
March 26
This handsome colt was born with severe contraction of the tendons in both front legs, caused by poor position while still in the womb. Several days of tetracycline and physical therapy increased the colt's range of motion on the 2
front feet from zero, but not far enough to get him up even on his toes. Our vet volunteered to
do the surgery anyway, even though it was highly unlikely it would succeed. Surgery failed. We had no choices left, and put him down. RIP
March 22
Luvy had a bay overo colt 3/22 at about 1:30am. Consistent with her foaling history, she gave no warning. About 3/4
bagged, no wax or milk, not particularly soft under or around the tail ... she just lay down and pushed her foal out in a matter of minutes.
This is a heartbreaker because he is a VERY well put together colt, but was born with severely contracted tendons on 1 front foot and 1 hind. Vets think that this occurs when
the foal gets the foot stuck in an awkward position during the last weeks before foaling. With the contraction so severe there is potential there is bone or joint already compromised. His other 2
legs are already showing problems trying to compensate. We are rapidly exploring options, but there is a very real potential that even continuing physical therapy, with splints, or even surgery he
would never be sound or even be able to move without pain. We await recommendations from our vet and consulting vets, but it is very likely they will suggest we put him down. :-(
March 20
Luvy is now over 2/3 bagged, past her due date of 3/13. Tonight she is a bit restless, and her belly is moving up and down as if she is trying to position her foal.
March 4
Luvy is bagging again, at about 2/3 now. (Last foal she delivered with no notice, 2/3 bagged.) Softening around the tail. Starting to soften under the tail. Tentative foaling window 1-5 AM / PM (PST)
Feb 24
PM Luvy is again showing a hint of cloudy transitional wax. She has been showing hints of this wax off and on. She is still about half bagged, not notably softening under the tail. With her milk moving forward, I'm
suspecting when she finally foals she'll give little warning, potentially bagging and softening in a matter of hours.
Feb 16
AM Luvy showed transitional wax again, fairly cloudy this time. Hoping she takes her time in transition since she is only 314 days.
Feb 15
Luvy is still stalled at 1/2 bagged. No further discharges indicating milk in transition. No other visible indication that she is doing anything but progressing toward a future foaling.
Feb 9
Luvy is just over 1/2 bagged, and tonight has a slight clear discharge from the nipples. Her milk is apparently in transition ...
33 days prior to her due date! Hopefully she will remain in transition for a couple more weeks!
Georgie was born in our barn, and is
owned by family ... very active in backcountry packing. Jackie (molly mule named after her dad) was born in the same stall as her mom!
Georgie did a great Horse Statue imitation in the days prior to her first foal in 2007. She showed wax on individual nipples off and on for 6 days with milk in transition, then finally waxed on both. The foal didn't
position quite right so she paced and pawed all night in stage 1 labor to finally produce her foal (repositioning required) at 7:12 AM, 350 days.
April 28
Georgie continued to be vaguelly restless. Starting about 10pm her behavior was more intense, including obvious pacing and pawing.
11:11 something startled the barn. Georgie stopped pacing, but still pawed occasionally, looking wary and distracted. Lay down 11:48
and stayed down. Water broke 11:51.
Molly (girl) mule out 11:55 unassisted in 4 minutes. 351 days.
April 28
4pm
4pm Georgie has gobs of white wax on both sides. She has been mildly restless all day. Her bags are now close to full.
April 28
3am
Georgie has white WAX! on both sides 3am. Still about 1/2 bagged. Mildly restless, soft poop. Her foaling window has been changing in the past couple of weeks, with no real window defined, but the moving target falls
mostly 5-12.
April 27
no notable change, but a bit restless with her tail 5-6pm
April 24
Georgie is almost 1/2 bagged
April 14
Georgie is about 1/3 bagged
April 4
Georgie just arrived in our barn ... starting to bag up, not even 1/4 bagged
